Overview
A stand out performance centre, distinguished not only in its design and function, but for its impact on the school’s cultural ambiance.
Innovative and functional, Huntingtower School's Performing Arts Centre features a distinctive curved structure with a dramatic, drum-shaped exterior that presents an impressive public interface. The architectural elements contribute to the striking addition and harmonise it with the school’s existing landscape, including a curved feature precast facade, cantilevered curved staircases, high-level steel gantries, and segmented high-performance curtain wall faceted glazing that spans the full height over the two-tiered auditorium.
A unique curtain wall system combines elements from two different manufacturers, a design that at the time, had not yet been realised. The glass suppliers initially couldn’t fulfil the requirement for a double-glazed unit with low-iron glass. Consequently, our window contractor had to engage in extensive consultations with multiple suppliers, developing and testing a range of samples and gathering performance data to ensure the system exceeded design and performance expectations.
The building houses a 759-seat auditorium to facilitate a spectrum of performances and events. Design details emphasise acoustic precision with finishes that echo the standards of a premier concert hall. Essential operational functions, like the orchestra put and air plenums, sit within the lower tier. Above, the auditorium’s ceiling, adorned with elegantly curved acoustic panels, complements the walls’ sophisticated timber panelling, collectively enhancing the auditorium’s acoustic integrity. The precast components of the building boast a unique hatched bamboo pattern and enhance the acoustic insulation of the auditorium from surrounding common areas, ensuring an undisturbed auditory experience.
Huntingtower School's Performing Arts Centre is a multifaceted space where creativity and education converge. The building skilfully marries form with functionality, enriching the educational experience and cultural fabric of the school community.
We integrated the PAC with the existing drama and VCE Centre. Positioned at the front of the campus, its unique drum-shaped structure creates a dynamic street presence.
Students enjoy features such as a grand foyer with presentation platforms, change rooms, a cloakroom, and modern amenities.
The curved structure is made up of 12m high, 14 tonne precast panels braced with steel, which required creative temporary engineering within the active school.
